Description
A supplementary symbol indicating that the finished weld face must be flush (flat, level) with the surrounding base material surface. Typically achieved by grinding, machining, or careful welding technique.
In plain English
The weld face must be ground or dressed flat -- no crown, no bump, no dip. A straight line drawn across the weld symbol means 'make it flat'. This does not happen naturally on most welds, so it usually means someone has to grind it smooth after welding. Common when surfaces need to be smooth for fatigue life, appearance, mating parts, or NDT (ultrasonics work better on a flush surface).
Symbol position
Straight line drawn across the top of the weld symbol.
Size notation
No additional dimensions. May specify finishing method (G = grind, M = machine, C = chip, H = hammer).
Common uses
- Fatigue-critical joints (smooth surface improves fatigue life)
- Surfaces requiring NDT (especially ultrasonics)
- Mating surfaces and bearing areas
- Aesthetic/architectural applications
