Description
A butt weld where one member is bevelled on both sides, forming a K-shaped groove against the square face of the other member. Welded from both sides. Combines the economy of single-bevel (one member prepped) with the distortion benefits of double-sided welding.
In plain English
One plate gets bevelled on both the top and bottom, the other stays square -- like a K shape. You weld from both sides. This is the T-joint equivalent of the double-V: less distortion, less filler than a single-bevel, and you only prep one member. The arrow points to the member that gets the double bevel. Very common on heavy T-joints in structural steel.
Symbol position
K symbol on the reference line (bevel symbols on both sides). Arrow points to prepared member.
Size notation
Groove angle and depth for each side. May be asymmetric.
Notation examples
Broken arrow convention difference as per single-bevel and single-J.
Arrow indicates prepared member. Each side dimensioned independently.
Broken arrow indicates prepared member in System A. Both sides dimensioned.
Common uses
- Heavy T-joints with both-side access
- Cruciform joints in structural steel
- Crane girder web-to-flange connections
