Description

A weld in the groove formed between one curved surface and one flat surface, such as a round bar welded to a flat plate. One side of the groove is the natural curve, the other is the flat member.

In plain English

One piece is curved (a tube, bar, or rolled section) and the other is flat. The groove between them is your flare-bevel -- half a flare-V. The flat side makes it easier to weld than a full flare-V because you have a solid surface on one side. Common when welding tubes or bars to flat plates, gussets, or base plates.

Symbol position

One curve + vertical line on the reference line.

Size notation

Effective weld size to the left. The flat member is the reference face.

Common uses

  • Round bar or tube to flat plate connections
  • Gusset plate attachments to tubular members
  • Structural hollow section to base plate joints
  • Bumper and guard rail attachments
