Description

A weld in the groove formed between two curved (convex) surfaces, such as two round bars or two flanged sections placed together. The natural groove between the curves acts as the weld preparation.

In plain English

When you put two round bars side by side, or two curved flanges together, you get a natural V-shaped groove where they touch. That is your flare-V. No prep needed -- the geometry gives you the groove for free. The effective throat depends on how deep you can penetrate into that groove. Common on handrails, roll cages, and anywhere round sections meet.

Symbol position

Two opposing curves on the reference line.

Size notation

Effective weld size (depth of fill) shown to the left. Radius of curvature may be noted.

Common uses

  • Round bar to round bar joints (handrails, frames)
  • Tube to tube connections
  • Rolled section flanges
  • Roll cage and safety structure joints
