Description
A continuous seam weld made using an arc or beam welding process rather than resistance welding. The arc or beam travels along the joint, fusing the overlapping sheets into a continuous seam.
In plain English
A continuous seam made with an arc (MIG, TIG, plasma) or beam (laser, electron beam) process rather than resistance wheels. You run the torch or beam along the overlap and fuse the sheets together in a line. Used when resistance seam equipment is not available or when the material or thickness is outside resistance welding range. Common in laser welding of tailored blanks in automotive.
Symbol position
Circle with horizontal lines and shading on the reference line.
Size notation
Seam width 'c' to the left. Length to the right.
Common uses
- Laser-welded tailored blanks in automotive
- Electron beam seam welding of aerospace components
- Plasma seam welding of stainless steel sheet
- Continuous arc-welded lap seams
