TIG welders for edge welds

Precision TIG machines for thin sheet and edge weld applications.

→ weldingandwelder.com

Description

A butt weld between two thin sheet metal members where the edges have been flanged (bent up) to provide material for the weld. The flanges are fused together, often without additional filler metal. Limited to thin sheet applications.

In plain English

Both thin sheets have their edges bent up (flanged) before welding. You then fuse those flanged edges together -- often with just TIG and no filler rod, the flanges melt together. It is the sheet metal version of a butt weld for material too thin for a conventional groove prep. Common on ductwork, enclosures, and any thin-gauge work where you need a butt joint but cannot machine a groove.

Symbol position

Flanged butt indicator on the reference line.

Size notation

Sheet thickness and flange height may be noted.

Common uses

  • Thin sheet metal ductwork
