Description

A single-bevel preparation with an extended root face. Combines the economy of a single-bevel (one member prepared) with the fit-up benefits of a broad root face.

In plain English

One plate bevelled, but with a generous land left at the root -- like a single-bevel version of the Y-prep. Gives you the best of both worlds: only one plate to prep, and a solid root face to prevent burn-through. You will see this on heavier T-joints and corner joints where the root side is inaccessible.

Symbol position

Modified half-V with land indicator on the reference line.

Size notation

Root face, groove angle, and root opening dimensioned as per single-bevel.

Common uses

  • Heavy T-joints welded from one side
  • Corner joints on thick plate
  • Joints where backgouging is not possible
  • Structural connections with limited access
