Description

A single-V preparation with an extended root face (land). The Y-shaped profile provides better fit-up and reduces the risk of burn-through on the root pass compared to a standard V-prep with a thin root face.

In plain English

Same as a single-V but with a thicker flat bit left at the bottom of the groove -- the root face or 'land'. The symbol looks like a Y. That extra metal at the root gives you something to aim at and stops you blowing through on the root run. Useful when you cannot get a backing bar on the back side or when the fit-up is not perfect. The land is typically 3-6 mm depending on plate thickness.

Symbol position

Y symbol on the reference line.

Size notation

Root face dimension shown separately. Groove angle and root opening as per single-V.

Common uses

  • Thick plate where burn-through risk is high
  • Joints welded from one side without backing
  • Pipe welding with open root
  • Situations where precise root gap control is difficult
