Description

A supplementary symbol indicating that the weld extends between two specific points on the joint, identified by letters or coordinates on the drawing. Used when a weld does not extend the full length of a joint.

In plain English

A double-headed arrow or notation showing that the weld runs from point A to point B and nowhere else. Used when you only want a weld along part of a joint -- maybe the first 200 mm is welded, then nothing, then another section. The start and end points are labelled on the drawing. This saves over-welding and controls distortion in long joints where full-length welding is unnecessary.

Symbol position

Letters or coordinates at each end of the weld extent, connected by the reference line or noted on the drawing.

Size notation

Start and end points identified by letters (e.g., A-B). Length may be dimensioned.

Common uses

  • Partial-length welds on long joints
  • Welds starting or stopping at specific structural features
  • Controlled weld placement for distortion management
  • Welds around openings or cutouts (specific extents)
